year. Last year I had nearly 500. This
year, it's probably going to be closer to
the 200 to 250 mark. Gray foxes, we
used to get a lot of gray foxes in this
area and now we don't. I get 30 a season
and that's about it.
"Unbelievable as it is, everybody
sees coyotes, and everybody's targeting
coyotes, but they don't get many coyotes. Not in this area. Between hunting
and trapping, I might see 20 to 25 a
year. There are five times that many
people out there trying to get them."
Ferris has run a two-man operation
most of his time as a fur buyer. Mike
is currently his helper, and Bill Siegel
of Pine Grove still helps occasionally.
Bill and Junior Brown - who died
some time ago - were mainstays in the
shop for decades. Mike and Bill surely
have extended the shop's longevity by
helping Ferris manage the incoming
furbearers. They're a big reason the
door of this business has continued to
swing open in recent years.
"I don't advertise, it's all word of

mouth and I have more business than
I can handle," Ferris noted. "We still
probably buy well over 90 percent
on the carcass because the seller isn't
experienced enough to skin, or has no
time or no place to do it."
But not even the need for a fur buyer
and the company of friends can keep
Ferris in the game much longer.
"I feel bad about retiring some day,
because my customers don't want me
to," Ferris said. "They're my friends,
and most of my customers have been
loyal to me and it almost seems like I
never lost a customer. I mean, I have
lost a few, but they keep coming back
saying, 'I used to come here 10, 20,
30 years ago,' so it seems like I never
lost anybody. But retiring becomes a
greater necessity with each passing
year, given my age and health.
"I'd like to enjoy hunting and trapping more, which I haven't been able
to do much the last few years," he said.
"I'd like to do those things yet, while I
still can!"

AUDRA SOMMER, 6, took advantage of the
Mentored Youth Hunting Program and tagged
this 22-pound gobbler in Clearfield County on
the youth turkey hunt day.

with a 20-gauge at 15 yards.
