a cap or primer, there will be a telltale mark that the bolt/hammer is not
out of alignment. Off-center marks
are a signal of misalignment.
On a flintlock, make sure the cock
(proper name for the hammer) is
bolted tightly to the
internal tumbler.
This prevents the
wiggle, the movement that prevents
the flint from solidly
slamming into the
frizzen and hence,
causing a misfire.
"Hot ignition"
is the third
component of a lock that promises
boom. This is achieved by letting the
heat of ignition, regardless of whether
it was started by sparks or hot gases,
reach the powder train on the inside
of the barrel.
When flint and steel yield a
hot shower of sparks into the pan
half-filled with priming powder,
the 480-degree ignition temperature of black powder erupts into
a 2,000-degree or more firestorm.
That's more than enough energy to
ignite the powder train on the inside
of the barrel, unless the touch-hole
is misaligned or blocked. As you
look for that next flintlock, carry a
paperclip in your pocket. Straighten
one segment of the wire and insert it
into the touch-hole. If there is not a
straight line from the top of the pan
centered into the barrel, don't buy
the gun!
Similarly, percussion rifles need
nipples that allow an unrestricted
flow of hot gases from the cap to
reach the bore. Sounds like a simple
concept, but the longer the distance
from the top of the nipple to the
end of the channel, the cooler the
ignition gases arrive. When hot
gases make a right turn inside the
flash channel of the nipple and snail
(nipple is screwed into this), they
really lose their heat
energy. This was the
reason for magnum
primers made by
CCI.
In-lines also
suffer from
cooling ignition
temperatures from
209 primers as they
blow down the flash
channel on the inside of the breech
plug. The longer the breech plug
channel, the less reliable the ignition
becomes. But conversely, the shorter
the breech plug and threads, the less
capable the breech plug becomes to
safely sealing off the pressure from
burning powder in the breech.
Some older in-lines had this
problem, so watch out for "good
deals" on used guns. Most modern
manufacturers have conquered this
problem.
If there is not a
straight line from
the top of the pan
centered into the
barrel, don't buy
the gun!

enough on the stock to see through
the scope and as a result, you shot
over the back of the deer, and now
you're ready to buy a new gun?
It won't matter if you are using
open or optical sights, but it does
matter how the stock fits your body.
Most Americans, but not all, can
shoot a 14-inch trigger pull quite
well. If you are shorter in stature, you
may need to shorten the stock. This
is not a problem with wooden stocks.
