2014 Deer Season Primer
I
F there's one thing that puts hunters
in the woods, it's deer season. From
state to state, across the nation, deer
are the reason most of us hunt. In fact,
there are few days that pass in a calendar year when we don't think about
whitetails. It's what puts that zeal in our
step, especially when we're heading out
to hunt or scout.
Over the 2013-14 seasons, hunters
had plenty of opportunities throughout
the commonwealth. They took an estimated 352,920 deer - an increase of
about 3 percent over the
previous seasons' take.
The antlered deer harvest
was 134,280 and the antlerless take was 218,640.
In all, it was a pretty average season, despite some
trying hunting conditions in the firearms seasons after Thanksgiving. About 47 percent
of the antlered bucks taken by hunters
were 1½ years old; the remainder, 2½
years old or older. Additionally, 62
percent of the antlerless kill was made
up of adult females.
Reasons why buck-harvest rates
change can be related to hunting
pressure, deer availability and weather
conditions.
In many ways, hunting success
and participation rates in the 201314 seasons were pretty much in line
with average hunter success in recent
seasons. The buck harvest was about
the same as the previous year's, and it
still takes four antlerless licenses to kill
an antlerless deer, and the number of
antlerless licenses sold influences the
antlerless harvest.
Still, anyone who has hunted deer
long enough knows that few things in
deer hunting remain the same. It is a
sport of perpetually changing elements.
Almost everything changes, including
the deer and hunters. Deer hunting,
consequently, has always been about
adaptability. And patience. Lots of
patience.
Deer hunting is a
thinking person's game.
Sure you have to be in
shape for some hunts,
and have permissions,
cold-weather gear or special arms and equipment
lined up for others. But
gathering information
through scouting and
processing it correctly
is always what makes
the hunt. Overthink
it or ignore the obvious and you're
toast. Even when you're right, you're
rarely right more than 50 percent of
the time. But when you are right, it's
pretty sweet. It's what brings us back.
Again and again.
One of the more noticeable changes
in deer hunting in recent years has
been in the archery season. Since crossbows were legalized in 2009, archery
license sales have grown by more than
10 percent. But the changes to the
season didn't stop there.
"Throughout the archery season,
crossbows take about half of the antlered and antlerless deer," said deer biologist Chris Rosenberry, agency Deer
