If you miss a bird, you can often
follow the direction of its flight and
find it again. On any given morning,
if you find one bird, you have a chance
to kick up others in the general area.
Remember, they are migratory, and they
travel together.
My first hunt for these birds is a case
in point. Back in the late 1980s, I was
in law school, and a friend of mine was
getting ready to get married.
As a wedding present, Earl was
given 80 acres in Tioga County, near
the Potter County line off Route 6, and
he invited me and two other friends to
come up to hunt the property, which had
an old apple orchard on it.
We bowhunted in the morning.
Although the property had trails all over
it, we did not spot a deer. After lunch,
we got the shotguns and began pushing the property. We were after grouse,
and it was textbook grouse cover, with
apple trees, stone walls and thick brush.
We picked up a few squirrels, initially.
Then we began to kick up birds, but they
weren't grouse. After the second flush,
we figured out they were woodcock.

The rest of the afternoon, we kicked
up these birds, and all of us had our share
of misses. Later, we ate a meal of squirrel, hotdogs, beans and stew, but not
woodcock, and spent a night freezing
in the tents in which we slept.
The woodcock made our hunt exciting, though.
And while I never went back to Tioga
County, changing how I hunted helped
me intercept these birds again and again.
With the loss of farmland where
I used to find pheasants, rabbits and
doves, I began hunting state parks and
state game lands, and most of these
properties contain either large lakes or
creeks. For the most part, woodcock are
incidental game to what I am actually
after .
But a lot of places on these public
properties happen to be woodcock
haunts. And at spots where I kick them
up, I make a mental note, then go back.
Over the years, some of those places
stopped holding woodcock, because the
habitat no longer supported their needs.
I'd just search other places, and come
across birds again. If the property stays
thick and low, it will continue
to attract birds year after year. If
they're absent during one visit,
it does not mean you won't find
them there the next.
Tracking Migration
During the hunting season,
different waves of birds show up
at different times, and if the flights
were not there on say, Halloween,
they may show up a week or so
later. The only way to find them
is to put the time in and hit all the
cover you can.
While the season starts midOctober, and you can sometimes
