prior to the Monday opener, he didn't
see a bull.
"I started to get a bad feeling," he said.
Still, the hunt awaited.
Several of his friends came north for
the Monday opener, but when the day
came and went without a harvest, most
of them went home.
Only one, R.W. Grafton, stayed on.
By Thursday, the action was still light,
and Colpo found himself second-guessing
his decision to go it alone.
Starting at daylight near Route 555,
Colpo set off at a slow pace on a path
that would lead him perhaps 3 miles to
a spot where he encountered three cows
and a spike bull. While it might not have
been the 6-by-6 he'd dreamt of in the preseason, he'd be happy for his opportunity
to hang it upside down from the game
pole at Old Boy Camp.
"I've thought about that," Colpo said
of the opportunity to guide himself and
bring an elk back to his own camp. "How
many people in Pennsylvania have ever
done that?"
And things were just getting started.
With an elk and buck to his credit,
Colpo had an unexpected opportunity to
fill his fall turkey tag. Hunting grouse near
Worthington with his father, the late Al
Colpo, the hunters bumped into a flock of
turkeys, sending the birds scattering. Had
he been hunting alone, Colpo said, the
story likely would have ended with him
breaking up the flock. But his dad was
known to carry a turkey call with him in
the field, and he just happened to have
one with him on this day, too.
Al called a few times and an old hen
came in on a string.
It was shaping up to be a special year,
and for Colpo, who had never before
taken a bear, the bear season held new
hope. While putting in his time scouting for elk, Colpo had seen a number of
bears. Returning to his camp in Benezette
Township, he was hoping to meet up with
one again.
With the clock winding down on the
second day of the season, the party of five
hunters that spent the morning putting
on drives for one another decided to end
its push and split up.
Colpo wasn't on stand long before he
heard something nearby - probably one
of the others, he thought. But the sow
that dressed out at 133 pounds after being
felled by Colpo's .270 proved him wrong.
"I was pretty ecstatic, thinking, 'Boy,
what a season!'" he said.
And as it turned out it wasn't over.
He'd go on to take a doe during rifle season, in the same area he took the buck.
