cess and budgetary concerns. In the
Poconos, 43 hares were captured and
collared, compared to a dozen on State
Game Lands 29. Hares seem to have
larger home ranges in the western study
area, and recaptures there suggested
a large portion of the population on
the northern hardwood study site had
been trapped and collared. That left a
smaller-than-desired sample size.
"Sample size is everything to a telemetry study and they simply couldn't
capture enough hares in Warren
County," explained Ben Jones, Habitat
Division chief for the Game Commission's Bureau of Wildlife Habitat
Management.
But the effort in the Poconos
has been exceptionally productive.
Fieldwork is being directed by Laura
Gigliotti, who is pursuing her master's
in Wildlife and Fisheries Science at
Penn State. Last winter's biting cold
and deep snow made her time afield not
to mention driving on Interstate-80
between the study areas and State College, challenging. But the snowshoes
she and her research colleagues have
collared in the ongoing study have
been helping Pennsylvania wildlife
managers get closer to Pennsylvania
hares than they've ever been.
One of the biggest surprises was the
hardiness of the study hares.
"I'm actually surprised at how well
they're surviving," Gigliotti said.
"Based on the literature, I thought we
would have a much higher predation
rate and much lower survival. But they
seem to be doing OK."
Halfway through last summer, 25
of the 55 hares originally transmittercollared remained on the air - only
four on State Game Lands 29. But that
sample size was plenty to keep Gigliotti
in business. Most losses were to predators. Others, internal parasites, or the
collar dropped off.
