Taking Inventory: The aerial Mid-Winter Waterfowl Survey (MWS)
has been conducted since the 1930s throughout the United States and
provides data on the distribution and relative abundance of waterfowl
species on wintering grounds. This survey also provides the best population estimates for species such as tundra swans and brant, which are
difficult to survey on their Arctic breeding grounds.
In Pennsylvania, the MWS is conducted the
first or second week in January, depending on the weather. The survey covers
zones throughout Pennsylvania. Fellow
waterfowl biologist Kevin Jacobs and
I are responsible for surveying the
Lake Erie shoreline, Presque Isle Bay,
Pymatuning and Geneva Marsh, along with other small regional lakes and
dams. Annual statewide MWS counts over the past 10 years have ranged from
47,325 to 81,660 birds; the most numerous species are usually Canada and snow
geese, mallards, black ducks, mergansers and tundra swans. The survey provides
insight into how changing winter conditions affect wintering waterfowl distribution. The results of past Mid-Winter Surveys for Pennsylvania can be viewed

Working For Rusties: The rusty blackbird is an enigmatic songbird of the boreal forest that spends the
winter in the swamplands of the southeastern
United States. In between its breeding ground
and its wintering ground, it travels in flocks
through the Great Lakes and Northeast
regions of the United States, including
Pennsylvania. It has one of the most
significant population declines of any
bird in North America, perhaps down 85 to
90 percent over the last 60 years. In migration, "rusties" forage in shallow waters
of riverside woods and wetlands where wood and black ducks also are found. In
2014, we cooperated with the Rusty Blackbird International Working Group
in the first spring blitz using the eBird format to determine where they migrate
and in what numbers. Pennsylvania volunteers contributed 742 reports out of
the 13,398 reports across the continent, ranking seventh among participating
states and provinces. Rusties were reported from 53 of the state's 67 counties
with Philadelphia, Crawford, Schuylkill and Centre counties producing the most
reports. We learned that locations such John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge,
Conneaut Marsh/Geneva Marsh (State Game Lands 213) and many other managed properties were good places to observe this species.
