A
Timber Baron
shrieking, almost maniacal-like cackle nearly jolted my mentored hunting
companion from his comfortable seat. "What was that?" he cried aloud.
Seeing his reaction, I tried in vain to stifle my laughter.
"That, my young friend, was none other than the timber baron of the big
woods, a pileated woodpecker."
With surprisingly loud wing beats, the crow-sized bird had
swooped into our hiding place against a centuries-old witness
oak. Almost instantly, it must have spied us, realized its mistake
and catapulted from the side of the tree, accompanied by a
blistering cacophony of sound and fury.
A lot of people don't know quite what to think of this
unusual bird. Some aren't even quite sure what to call it.
The pileated woodpecker is far and away our largest
woodpecker. It may have a wingspan of 28-inches or more,
roughly the size of a crow. Compared to the diminutive downy
woodpecker, which weighs barely an ounce, this winged "Paul
Bunyan" tips the scales in the 10- to 16-ounce range.
The word pileated means "crested," and its brilliant red crest is undoubtedly
the bird's most striking feature. Other than this signature plumage, the pileated
is mostly black. Its head is striped in black and white, and the wings are edged
in white with partial whitening underneath.
Our forests furnish abundant evidence that the pileated, belonging to a guild
of wood-hewers and carpenters, is the master workman of them all. The signs
of this "feathered lumberjack" are unmistakable.
In its search for larvae, ants or wood-boring beetles, the pileated chisels
cavernous, rectangular holes into the very heart of any tree it attacks, littering
the ground with large chips like those from a woodman's axe.
The call of the pileated woodpecker has been likened to that of an exotic
jungle bird: wild, primal, eccentric. Some say it utters a flicker-like yucka-yuckayucka but much louder and penetrating than its smaller cousin. My thought is
that no written description has truly captured the essence of its unique voice.
Despite their reclusive nature, pileateds are by no means rare. Their numbers
are on the rise, attributable, perhaps, to the widespread regrowth of eastern forests.
Listen for their distinct call. Watch for that flaming red crest. And if your
game tag remains unfilled after your day afield, but you've been witness to this
spectacular woodpecker, consider yourself fortunate. You've had a successful day.
