After many years
would the author
fulfill his dream?

ITH THE DARK shadows of
night now gone, the woods
came alive.
From my tree stand, I had a great
view of the valley in front of me and it
was now legal hunting time.
With high hopes of bagging a buck, I
heard the sound of leaves crunching in
the distance. Heart racing, I anticipated
seeing a deer.
The form that appeared was not a
buck, rather a coyote.
I had never seen a coyote before and
was amazed at its rugged beauty.
With my crosshairs now fixed on the
majestic animal, I decided not to shoot.
The first day of deer season was just
underway, and I didn't want to scare
away any deer with a gunshot.
I would wait for another day to begin
my quest for a coyote. Little did I realize
the difficulty that awaited.
Over the next 15 years, I didn't so
much as see a coyote. I'd all but given
up.
All the while, I kept asking myself
why I did not shoot while I had the
chance.
During the 2006 spring gobbler
34

season, I was blessed one morning
to glimpse a coyote running across a
field, only for it to swiftly disappear in
the brush.
An amazing sight, I thought, but it
wasn't over. As quickly as the coyote
left my view it re-entered, this time
joined by another coyote.
They took turns halfheartedly
pursuing a ring-necked pheasant.
What a great day. My quest was now
alive again.
Over the next couple years, I
saw several other coyotes, but each
experience offered no chance to take
this elusive furbearer.
Then, during the summer of 2009,
as my wife and I were setting up a blind
ahead of the archery season, we noticed
movement in a field.
It turned out to be two coyotes
romping in the sun.
What luck - the coyotes were clearly
unaware of our presence, and there I
was without a firearm.
Upon finishing the blind setup, the
coyotes were still in the field sunning.
I decided to go home, grab my rifle and
license, and return.
