mediately looks for a nearby blind or
stand. It is like putting out a sign "Good
Hunting Here!"
If I want to mark spots around my
stand, I use something natural, such as
a stick leaning against a tree or a small
pile of stones, anything that alerts me
to the point of a known distance, but
which goes unnoticed by the casual
hunter.
RANGEFINDERS
A rangefinder can accurately determine the distance, but I prefer using it
ahead of time, if possible. When in my
stand, I range in several surrounding
objects, noting the distance.
If a deer presents itself
within my shooting
area, I quickly determine the distance
by referencing the
known distances. If
the deer is moving,
I can alter the range
while at full draw
with a simple glance
at my reference marks.
I don't want to waste
time ranging in a deer when I
should be preparing to shoot. I attach
my rangefinder to my jacket with a
lanyard keeping the rangefinder close
at hand, but allowing me to drop it
with minimum movement, if required.
SIGHTS AS RANGEFINDERS
Years ago, I developed a range estimation system using my bow sight
as a custom built-in rangefinder that
puts me on the mark every time. The
method is quite simple, but does require
some detailed work to set up. I have
outlined the system below, step by step.
Referencing our previously men58
tioned deer dimensions, I cut a piece
of cardboard 14 inches square - the approximate height of a mature deer from
the bottom to top behind the shoulder.
On that square, I draw a 10-inch
circle positioned slightly toward the
bottom of the square because a deer's
heart and lungs lie low in the body
cavity.
Sight-in the TOP pin of your sight
to hit the middle of the circle from
a starting distance of 20 yards. Once
sighted-in, start at 20 yards and step
forward to the target one step at a time,
shooting an arrow from each step and
constantly holding on the middle of
the 10-inch circle until you get
to 5 yards. You should see
your arrows cluster in the
middle and slowly begin
to hit higher. The arrows should stay
in the circle. If
your arrows hit
high, outside the
circle, redo your initial sight setting moving
back to 21 or 22 yards and
repeat.
With today's faster bows, it is possible that, depending upon your bow
weight and speed, the distance of your
first pin can be set at a farther distance.
The object is to find the distance
from which you will keep all of your
arrows in the 10-inch circle from your
starting distance to 5 yards using the
same pin and holding it on the center
of the 10-inch circle.
Once you have finalized the position of the TOP sight pin, stand at
the longest distance for which it was
sighted-in and extend your arm as if
you going to shoot.
