to ensure the barrels are perfectly round
with parallel sides.
Next, the blanks are drilled to about
0.005 inches under the desired bore size.
In this process, the blank is placed
in a fixture that fully supports and spins
it, while a stationary drill bit is pushed
through the bore.
After drilling, the barrel is reamed, to
remove imperfections. In this process,
the reamer spins as the barrel is pushed,
bringing the bore to its final dimensions.
The next step is "rifling" the bore and
it is commonly done in one of four ways:
cut, broached, button or hammer-forged.
The groove depth of the rifling is dependent upon caliber and can be run from
0.002 inches to 0.005 inches.
Cut rifling is the oldest form and it
actually scrapes away steel using a single
hook cutter.
Each pass of the cutter takes off about
0.0001 inches of one groove.
After each pass, the barrel is indexed
for the next groove.
This process is repeated until all groves
have the desired depth.
This type of rifling takes the most time
- about one hour - to complete and is the
least stressful on the barrel.
But it is the most expensive method
of rifling.
Kreiger makes barrels in this manner
on a custom basis and they are renowned
for their accuracy.
Broached rifling is the second option
and is a quicker way of cutting rifling.
It uses a rod that has a series of cutting
discs that are progressively larger than the
previous one. The barrel is spun at the
desired twist rate as the broach is pulled
through in one pass. Even though this is
a more stressful method, it is a much more
efficient, economical way of rifling barrels
with good results.
Smith & Wesson uses this method on
its handgun barrels.
Button rifling uses a carbide tool with
a reverse-imaged rifling pattern that includes the number of grooves and twist
