along with a water dish under the foot
treadle of the trap so that the bear could
get some water but he could not pull the
dish out.
We fed the bear but we needed to
minimize human contact, so once the
bear was released we did not want it to
associate people with food.
Food could be placed in the trap either
through the front door onto the treadle,
or poured through the holes in the sides
of the trap.
I had a steady supply of meat scraps
thanks to our local supermarket, so the
bear ate well.
My primary concern was satisfied
when my wife Mary came home, and
she had no problem with my plan to
rehabilitate the bear.
You have to love a woman who will
let you keep a mangy bear in the garage.
For two days the bear slept without
touching the food or water, and I
concluded the bear either was physically
exhausted from months of suffering, or
the Ivermectin had taken a toll. On the
third day, though, all the food was gone
and the bear drank all of its water.
The bear had stopped scratching and
each day was showing signs of getting
stronger and healthier.
In fact, I watched him chew through
a shank from a wild boar that I had
harvested in Mississippi. It took him all
of 10 minutes.
Not only was the bear putting on
weight, but the hair on its snout and face
was growing back. After nine days the
bear was growing restless, and ready
for release.

Once again, I tranquilized it so I could
give it the second dose of Ivermectin and
examine it to see how far it had come.
The scabbing on its body was greatly
reduced, and I noticed very fine hairs
growing back on most of its body.
There was almost no sign that it had
been scratching recently.
All in all I was impressed with how it
had recovered.
Upon release, the bear shot out of the
trap and never looked back. All that was
left was the cleanup, which included
sanitizing the trap, cleaning up the garage
and putting my clothing in the washer.
After having to put down so many
bears suffering from mange it felt good to
be able to save this one.
I thank everyone who contributed
to the care of this bear, especially the
local supermarket and to the people who
reported it to me.
I also thank my wife who, after all of
these years, doesn't question me when I
tell her, "don't go into the garage."
