This method has been shown to
greatly increase the detection of elusive marsh birds. The Second Atlas of
Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania - from
2004 through 2009 - used the national
protocol, but documented few likely
breeding sites for these species.
The Game Commission used the
national protocol again in 2014, and
with the help of volunteers, initiated
the first of a two-year study of the nine
marsh birds across Pennsylvania.
As part of the study, the agency
created an interactive map where
participants could view pre-identified
wetlands, reserve a location to monitor,
and enter their data - all via computer,
smartphone, or tablet.
The monitoring protocol also calls
for a simple vegetation assessment.
This is important, because another
accepted cause for marsh-bird decline
is the encroachment of Phragmites,
a giant reed that is an invasive species.
During the 2014 marsh bird survey,
275 wetlands were visited at dawn or
dusk in 38 counties, and 42 individuals
of six species were detected, including
the endangered American and least
bitterns.
Commonly detected birds, such as
willow flycatcher, wood duck, yellow
warbler, green heron and great blue
heron, were nice rewards for survey
participants.

Join the 2015 Marsh Bird Study
THIS PROJECT will continue in the 2015 breeding season, when we hope
to cover more wetlands with more volunteers, whose enthusiasm for
contributing to the conservation of marsh birds is invaluable. Survey dates
are limited to May 15 through June 30 to ensure that birds responding
to the playbacks are breeding, not migratory birds stopping over. Many
wetlands have not yet been visited and others require more attention
in the upcoming season.
The Game Commission is encouraging birders and bird enthusiasts
to participate in the 2015 survey. Luckily, marsh-bird species are generous with their flexibility, so participants can perform the survey in the
mornings or evenings. Whether you can make time to visit 10 wetlands,
or can only make it to your favorite local wetland, that data from your
contribution will be extremely helpful.
Individual reports through eBird and Important Bird Area monitoring
also are helpful in the monitoring of these elusive birds.
