Well, that seemed impossible.
To hunt, Adam would need to take
the hunter safety course and pass it, and
learn to shoot.
These seemed like very tough
challenges, and as my wife and I
discussed it, we had concerns. We
didn't want him to start something and
be very disappointed that he couldn't
finish it.
We didn't want to set him up for
failure.
But in the end, as we thought
this through, we decided "nothing
ventured, nothing gained," and we
started down the path.
The Game Commission's HunterTrapper Education division directed
me to a website with the information
Adam would have to learn to pass the
test. I was encouraged by, and very
much appreciated how open everyone
was to Adam's situation.
I shared this with Adam and every
week he'd say, "Let's do the Game
Commission course."
So we would read the information
on the computer, discuss it, and his
mother would go over the information
the next day.
Meanwhile, I started to teach him
how to shoot. First with a BB gun,
then a .22, later a 20-gauge and a .243.

While not the best marksman, Adam
did pretty well, and we continued to
work on his skills.
The time came in late summer to
take the Hunter-Trapper Education
course. Adam and I patiently sat
through the classroom training, and at
the end of the second day, one of the
instructors graciously proctored the
test to Adam, separately from the rest
of the class.
The instructor read the questions,
and then allowed me to read them
again with Adam, as well as the
possible answers.
Adam did his best to answer the
questions, and although he missed a
few, he passed the course.
What a day that was for us, and I
bought him his first hunting license
that same evening.
My wife said I seemed more excited
than Adam was, and she might have
been right.
That was about five years ago, and
we've hunted together for deer and
turkey ever since. Last year we had a
special spring gobbler hunt.
It was the second Friday of the
season.
We hunted on my family's property
in Clinton County, along with our
neighbor David Braucht. It was a

Customized Hunter-trapper eduCation
Hunter-Trapper Education is available with customized testing for students
with special needs. If reading-comprehension is a barrier, a visual version of
the test containing pictures and charts can be provided. Many students each
year use this pathway to successfully complete their certification. Anyone
