of the Savage Model 99, which
hunters consider a big plus.
lever action. I liked the available
calibers for it, especially appealing
was the .250 Savage, and the fact
that a scope could be mounted low
over the receiver because of the lack
of an external hammer.
The Winchester Model 94 leveraction rifle was popular "back in the
day," but I never liked the top-eject
feature that required a scope to be
mounted on the side; it just didn't
appeal to me.
During the 1970s, when I started
hunting, a camp owner on the same
road where we had our cabin, near
the Allegheny National Forest in
Forest County, had a Model 99 in
.300 Savage, and the image of him
in his Woolrich outfit and that rifle
stuck with me, and I knew then that
one day I'd own one.
When I started collecting guns
in earnest, I finally got the chance
to buy a Model 99A carbine in
.250 Savage caliber made in 1971.
I intended the rifle to be my "rain
gun," or a spare in case I ever needed
it, and didn't use it much, but I did
want to take a deer with it.

Every major gun company has
one or two models that have become
JUNE 2015
legend and upon which much of
the company's reputation has been
built. This is true of the Model 99 for
Savage Arms.
There were many variants and
calibers (.22 Hi Velocity, .243 Win.,
.250 Savage, .25-35 Win., .284
Win., .30-30 Win., .300 Savage,
.303 Savage, .32-40 Ballard, .308
Win., .38-55, .358 Win. and .375
Win.) through the years, and the
following covers many, but not all
of the variants.
In 1899 the Savage Model 99
lever-action rifle was introduced
in .303 Savage, and the rotary
magazine held five rounds. An
interesting feature was the magazine
indicator that revealed at a glance
the number of cartridges in the
magazine.
The numbers on the brass
indicator are visible through a
small port on the left side of the
receiver. It was the first commercial
rifle (1912) to be chambered for a
high-velocity .22 cartridge - the .22
Savage Hi-Power. It also was the first
commercial rifle chambered for the
.250 Savage, also called the .2503000, which first appeared in 1913.
With the 87-grain bullet it was
the first major factory-produced
round to reach the 3,000 feet-persecond mark.
