couldn't reveal its numbers, the guys were
quite certain it was the sow that we'd released at the south orchard, 10 years prior.
Based on their observations, they
speculated that she had likely produced
about 20 cubs on the farm, including that
initial set of triplets and at least one set
of quadruplets.
Early in the fall of 2013, while tending
the orchard where this little sow had been
trapped and tagged, the men encountered
her lying on the ground within just a few
yards of that earlier event. The grand old
lady was barely breathing and completely
unresponsive to their presence.
Quite fittingly, her human friends were
with her when she took her last breath.
Her life and their interaction had

come full circle back to the orchard where
they'd met.
The men removed that tag - #18826
- from her ear and informed me of her
passing and the tag number.
In the spring of 2014, I requested
information about that bear tag number
from Mark Ternent, the Game Commission's bear biologist. His search of the
Game Commission's black bear database
revealed that this sow was 3 years old at
the time of her capture and tagging in July
2003 and in the 14th year of a productive
life at the time of her passing.
The biologist further stated that if she
had cubs at age 3, it would have been her
first litter. Assuming she had cubs every
second year thereafter (2005, 2007, 2009,
2011 and 2013) she would have had six
litters over her lifetime.
With the average litter containing
three cubs, it would be reasonable to
believe she produced 18 cubs, about 75
percent of which would have survived to
become yearlings, Ternent said.
The fellows at the farm truly knew this
bear and felt a special kinship of sorts with
her. On occasion, they'd seen her nursing
cubs and had observed her with successive
young. These avid hunters also had often
seen her from their tree stands during
turkey, bear and deer hunting seasons.
Not surprisingly, their observations of her
cub production, are consistent with the
biologist's estimation.
This "lady" of the forest enjoyed a long
and productive life under the watchful
eyes of her human friends who informed
all visiting hunters of her protected status.
Unfortunately, they could not protect her
from the ravages of mange.
Her passing was a sad event, but her
cherished memory lives on for the men
who delighted in protecting and caring
for her and her cubs.
