Bare Shafts

every time you lose a fletching, or have
some other minor arrow problem. Or
you could learn to be an arrow mechanic yourself. It's practical, cost-effective,
simple to do, and it opens wide the door
to customization.

You can get bare shafts from any archery pro shop. They'll have no wraps
or fletchings. In most cases, the shop
will cut the shafts to the length you
want and then glue the inserts.
Of course, you can get a saw and cut
the shafts yourself.
This is a tricky endeavor. You need
a setup that allows you to make a perfectly straight cut across the shaft.
There are plenty of specialty arrow
saws on the market, which are cutting saws combined with level, shaft
holders.
These rigs ensure the arrow is perfectly perpendicular to the saw blade
when you cut.
Since most arrow shafts are carbon
these days, be sure you have a dust-collection system attached to your saw, or
wear a dust mask when you're cutting.
You don't want to inhale carbon dust.
If you cut your own shafts, you can
be sure they're cut exactly how you
want them. At archery shops, workers
typically are more concerned about
getting the job done quickly. A rushed
job cutting an arrow shaft can lead to
wavy cut. It's caused when the center
of the shaft is pressed in, which flexes
the shaft as it's spun during the cutting
process.
When the insert is glued to the top
of this uneven cut, your point won't be
in line with the shaft. This won't necessarily cause a noticeable problem with
field tips, but it can be disastrous when
you screw in a fixed-blade broadhead.
When your arrow spins in flight, that
wobbling broadhead can disrupt the
consistent arrow flight you expect.
Fear not. An expensive and spaceconsuming arrow saw is not the only
