hunters are heading out the front driveway
of camp while black bears, unseen, are
rummaging through the garbage behind it.
"Dad's love was illustrating and painting for Game News," said Gary Rosato,
Nick's son. "I can remember in 1959
when he went down for the interview; he
took the whole family with him! There
was a lot of excitement!"
Covers, Gary Rosato said, were important to his dad.
"Everything he put into his paintings
was how he felt," Gary said of his father.
"Some paintings he could knock out in a
week or two. Then there were others he
would work on for seven or eight months."
Rosato started working with oil paints,
but eventually switched over to acrylics.
It was a move many wildlife artists made.
Putt was no exception.
"I wanted to paint, I didn't want to
watch paint dry," Putt said.
A full-time artist, Putt has a businesslike approach to his art. When collecting
reference material, he may spend two or
three days afield gathering. Once he settles
on a final design, he develops it.
"All the decision-making is done
before the sketch goes on the board," he
emphasized. When he's working with
paint, Putt's heading to the finish line.
Putt said kids ask him all the time,
"How can you do this?"
"I tell them, I don't know. It's a gift.
I've had it since the time I picked up a
pencil."
Thankfully, Putt's gift, and the work of
many of Pennsylvania's other important
wildlife artists has found its way to the
covers of Game News over the magazine's
first 1,000 issues. Let's hope it's a trend
that continues far into the future.
But let's not forget the art treasure
awash in this magazine's past.
