N IGHT 3 0 P OP RODE in the front seat of Bill's 1946 Plymouth sedan; I rode in the back - alongside three hounds. This was raccoon hunting in rural Fayette County in the late 1950s. My father-in-law, whom I called "Pop," had purchased a cabin along Indian Creek, near the village of Champion. We affectionately called it, "The Shack." And in making our regular weekend visits there, we got to know Bill, a Pittsburgh steelworker who owned a farm near the cabin. Bill loved to hunt
