raccoons, and as we began to accompany
him on nighttime raccoon-hunting trips to
the Laurel Ridge summit, Pop and I both
would learn a lot.
Bouncing back an old road into the
Forbes State Forest, Bill would stop the
car and release the hounds. They'd check
both sides of the road, stopping at culverts
or other places water had drained.
Often the dogs would hit scent, and
when they did, the chase was on.
On one of these first hunts, we followed their intense howling to a tree they
had circled, finally spotting the raccoon
on a limb over the creek.
Bill took the shot, and because I was
the youngest and was wearing rubber
boots, I retrieved the raccoon from the
creek before the dogs could get to it,
holding it high while wading to shore.
Many hunts like this one would follow.
But as Bill's oldest hound got on in years,
it lost its eyesight, and had to stop hunting.
Bill soon would add a new hunting
companion to the mix.
Jiggers was a mutt with some Airedale in her, and she proved to be a great
hunting dog.
She had a distinctive voice. She did
not bark or howl - it was more like a
combination of a yelp and a whine.
And we soon would learn that when
Jiggers sounded off, things were about to
happen. There was no stopping her.
FEBRUARY 2016
One night the dogs hit scent as we were
just getting out of the car, and they all took
off in the same direction.
Soon, Jiggers began her frantic yelps.
When we reached a big oak
tree, the dogs were pacing and
barking frantically.
We circled the tree, trying to see
through its leaves, but we couldn't
see the raccoon. Jiggers stuck her
nose in a large hole at the tree's base
and worked herself into a frenzy digging
and trying to get inside.
Finally, about 20 feet above
the opening, I saw a large hole and then
the head of a raccoon. As it emerged, I
placed it in the sights and dropped it.
It was almost as big as Jiggers.
Like usual at the end of these chases,
we headed back to the car with the raccoon, then took the dogs down the road
to hunt some more.
For Pop, these hunts sparked such
an interest he bought a young bluetick
hound that had been started on raccoons.
The hound accompanied Pop to the cabin
every weekend.
And on hunts, I would begin sharing
the backseat of Bill's car with four dogs,
instead of three.
Those were the days, or should I
say nights? Memories of those hunts,
The Shack, Bill and Pop all are fondly
recalled.
