In the Blood
O one in my immediate family hunted. When I wanted to go at the
age of 12, my father started hunting just to take me out. I'll always
be grateful to him for that.
With that being said, I had a ancestor who did some serious hunting,
though.
Some years ago, my mother, who I knew had ties to Kansas, after
researching her family tree, sent me information about my great, great
grandfather Charles Cox.
I learned that Grandpa Cox
came to Kansas by way of a
covered wagon in 1871.
A newspaper article from the
time mentioning Charlie Cox's
golden wedding anniversary read,
"There is no doubt that Charlie Cox
is the most distinguished buffalo
hunter now living in Osborne
County.
"Arriving in the Solomon
Valley in 1871, at the age of 17,
when the shaggy bovine king of the plains was chewing the grass on every
section of western Kansas, Charlie was the possessor of one of the best
repeating rifles manufactured."
I often think about what rifle Grandpa Cox carried on those hunts in
Kansas. Was it a Winchester Model 1866 lever-action with brass receiver,
known affectionately as the "Golden Boy," or possibly a Henry repeating
rifle?
I'd love to talk guns and hunting with him. I'd tell him that I'm partial
to bolt-action rifles, which he would be totally unfamiliar with, and my
favorite is a .270 Winchester Weatherby rifle.
He'd, perhaps, tell me what it was like seeing those massive herds of
bison covering the plains, and I'd tell him about hunting whitetails and
turkeys in the Pennsylvania hardwoods. What a conversation that would be.
