Mornings or Evenings?
The time of day can matter a lot when you're bowhunting.
A
RE YOU A "morning dove" or a
"night owl?"
Do you prefer bowhunting
deer in the morning or in the evening?
Ask that question to 100 bowhunters
and their preference might split 50-50.
So which is the better time?
The simple answer is both. Each has
its merits, and you'll probably find that
each has its merits at different points in
the season.
About 95 percent of the Pennsylvania
bucks I've taken with archery gear over
the past 26 years came in the morning.
And there's one leading explanation for
that: For most of that time, I worked
second shift, and I hunted mornings
almost exclusively. You can't tag a deer in
the evening if you're sitting in the office.
But based on trail-camera evidence,
my own experiences and those of friends,

patterns seem to develop through the
season in response to changes in the
weather, foliage and phase of the rut, and
these, among other factors, affect deer
movements.
Our statewide six-week archery deer
season typically begins around the first
Saturday in October. In Wildlife Management Units 2B, 5C and 5D, archery starts
about two weeks earlier and runs through
the firearms season, and then resumes for
several weeks after Christmas.
Early in the season, buck activity seems
best in the evening - especially for mature
bucks. Being predominantly a morning
hunter, I can say I've shot only one buck
in the morning during the first week of
season, and it was a 11/2-year-old. I can't
recall even seeing a mature buck in the
morning during that first week.
But I have shot a couple of bucks on
