into the bottomland. Daly moved into one
of the windows in the brush, about 70
yards ahead of where the shots appeared
to have been fired. There was blood on
the ground. From the spot, he followed a
short trail to where a button buck lay, shot
and left there.
It was early in the investigation, but it
was clear - it was only a matter of time
before charges would be filed.
Allen, who by this time had put away
the metal detector he used to perform a
quick sweep of the area after Skye turned
up the casings, talked about the boost in
efficiency the dogs bring to cases.
Without them, that metal detector
might be an officer's only chance to discover a spent shell or casing. And Allen
said he's worked many cases where's he
spent hours scanning back and forth, up
and down the road's shoulder with a metal
detector, only to come away empty.
Daly and Gunner were called to assist
in a similar scenario this fall.
There had been incident on state forest
ground where a shot was fired during a
fight between hunters. But after two days
of looking, rangers were unable to find the
empty cartridge.
It took Gunner all of five minutes to
turn it up from beneath vegetation.
While the dogs work to complete their
training, it seems obvious that, with the
K-9 unit in place, the Game CommisMARCH 2016
sion's law enforcement has ratcheted to
a new level. Scofflaws who otherwise
would have gotten away with their crimes
will be caught, simply because they can't
get away from the dogs' noses.
But the dogs only find what evidence is
there, Shoup pointed out. And if no crime
occurred, they can confirm that, too.
"So the dogs not only are recovering
evidence to prosecute people, they're
helping to exonerate people, too," Shoup
said.
Allen, who has a few high-crime sections within his response area, said he's
turned the heads of many of the police
officers with whom he works, because
their investigations so often involve the
search for a firearm.
And the more the dogs are used, and
the more success they have, the more
requests for their services likely will come
in. Their primary function, of course,
always will be investigations into wildlife
crimes.
Shoup said those who haven't seen the
dogs work might be skeptical about their
effectiveness. But seeing is believing, and
the unit's work during its first hunting
season, "made believers out of a lot of
WCOs," he said.
Simply put, Allen said, it's what the
dogs do.
"It's not hocus-pocus," he said. "It's
real, and the dogs can do it."
