the deer. This is where woodsmanship and
experience come into play.
Look for disturbances in leaf litter or
tracks and skid marks.
Following this sort of sign takes
patience and good observation skills.
Resist the temptation to doubt yourself
and continue on the best you can, because
the deer might begin bleeding again,
allowing you to pick up the trail.
If the blood trail peters out and no
further sign is visible, the deer might have
abruptly changed direction, giving the
impression it stopped bleeding.
When a blood trail stops unexpectedly,
the correct action is to back-trail a short
way and look to the left and to right of
where the trail was lost.
This technique is useful especially
when a light blood trail suddenly becomes
more voluminous, and then stops. In this
case, the animal might have stopped and
stood at the spot, then doubled back on the
blood trail and finally turned off it. When
backtracking, look for blood on brush
and weed stems, as well as on the ground.
If the blood trail hopelessly is lost, the
only option remaining is to begin a zig-zag
or grid pattern projecting forward from the

last blood sign.
Keep a positive attitude and don't
give up.
If there is a stream in the area, be sure
to follow its banks both upstream and
downstream because deer often head to
water when wounded.
This is especially true of paunch-shot
deer, because they often are found dead
near a small pond or creek. It's also a good
idea to carry binoculars. By frequently
stopping to sweep the woods ahead, a
great deal of time can be saved.
Some hunters say a mortally hit deer
will curl up under some deadfall and die,
but in 50 years of bowhunting, I've never
found one in any position other than
lying flat.
When searching ahead, look for a
patch of white where none should be.
Usually the white of the deer's underside
sticks out.
As hunters, we have an ethical and
legal obligation to make every effort to
recover a wounded animal. That recovery
might take 10 minutes or 10 hours.
But most deer hit with an arrow can be
recovered, if the hunter keeps a positive
attitude and doesn't hurry the job.
