& Quiet Birds

No two turkey hunts are the same.
F
OR NEARLY A MONTH, I'd
listen every morning to the same,
hollering group of gobblers.
All I needed was for the season to
open, and maybe I'd enjoy one of those
textbook hunts and tag a bird shortly
after fly-down.
But on the eve of the season opener, I
had to come up with a new plan.
Not far from where I'd been hearing
the gobblers, I ran into a hunter setting
up a tent blind. And he told me his son
was going to hunt where I'd planned
to go.
I was disappointed. But from all my
preseason scouting, I knew where a few
other gobblers were hanging out.
I picked one I thought would be unlikely to be pursued by other hunters,
and decided to hunt it.
Well before sunrise the next day, I
made a difficult ascent over rocks and

through a steep hollow to a spot where I
had regularly heard a gobbler all spring.
I was hoping for a quick hunt; it was
cold. But the tom didn't make a sound.
I tried clucking, yelping and even a
little gobbling - all in vain.
By 7:30, I decided to go for a walk,
but the only gobbling I heard was from
a distant section of a posted preserve I
do not have permission to hunt.
I was one tired 62-year-old after this
quiet hunt.
Sunday afternoon, my wife, Donna,
granddaughter Amber and I went for a
walk where I'd heard gobblers regularly
while scouting before the season.
We spotted a gobbler crossing the
road, not far from the parking lot.
I knew where I'd be the next morning. Reaching the parking lot again
Monday morning, I was delighted no
other vehicles were there.
