Bearable
OR MANY OF US, black bears aren't something we see regularly afield
or otherwise. I was in my 40s before I saw my first while bowhunting atop
Second Mountain in Schuylkill County, even though bears had inhabited
the ridge for decades.
But as memorable as that first encounter was, it was just the start of something
bigger, a sort of unilateral bonding. I wasn't the initiator.
That first bear made quite an impression on me as it neared my stand's tree. Its
build showcased strength. It rolled along cautiously. I thought for sure it would
be on my tree shortly. But it passed without incident, without detecting me or
my scent. At least that's what I thought.
The next night, I was back on the mountain. As I neared the place where I
stashed my tree stand, it became clear quickly something was wrong: my tree
stand no longer was buried in leaves. It had been pulled up, its cover blown.
A quick inspection sorted it out. The black bear had found it, probably led
there by my scent trail or raccoon cover scent. It likely had learned to associate
human scent with snacks or simply was just curious. But my stand was without
snacks; it was hidden in an outccropping that wasn't easy to reach. It seemed a
deliberate act.
Grateful I still had my stand, I went into a creek bottom that split the mountaintop to hunt. Halfway up the tree I looked to my left and there was the bear,
seemingly just passing through. I watched until it was gone and quickly scampered
up. I still wanted a buck!
I didn't see a deer that night. But I was two-for-two with bear sightings on
consecutive nights after a lifetime with none. The excitement was satisfying. It
put a little more wildness into the woods and overnight made me think about
more than deer on stand!
The bear and I never crossed paths again. But it continued its attempts to
"friend" me over the rest of the season. I learned this as I returned to trees from
which I had hunted earlier in the season. Each of those trees had fresh claw
marks embedded in the bark. Not just at the base, but all the way to the height
from which I hunted.
Obviously, there was something about me he was curious about. I'll never
know what.
So when you finally have that first encounter, just remember bears are just as
curious of us as we are of them. And I hope it doesn't try to join you in the tree,
or give away your tree stand!
