On the rifle season opener, my objective was to sit as long as it took to harvest
a quality buck, and thus, complete my
triple-trophy season.
In predawn darkness, I climbed into
my ladder-stand on the family farm - not
far from where I'd taken the turkey.
I had plenty of warm clothes and a
hearty lunch in my pack, and a great deal
of optimism for the hours that lay ahead.
Throughout the day, I enjoyed watching several does and yearling bucks cross
the large grass field my stand overlooked.
I knew that none of the bucks I'd seen
during archery season had been harvested,
so my odds were favorable, as long as I
could stick things out, pulling an all-day
shift.
At 3:40 p.m., my patience was
rewarded when a 9-point chased a young
doe into the field corner below me. As he
leapt through the tall grass, I yelled to stop
him, but his gait never slowed.
Just before he entered the woods, I
cracked off a swinging shot and hit him.
Two follow-up shots brought the big brute
to the ground, and I'd completed my trifecta - in only 10 days.
The feeling was incomparable to any30
thing I had ever experienced.
In the weeks that followed, my hot
streak continued. I harvested a buck in
New York, and later, a doe during the
WMU 5C extended season in Montgomery County.
I shared venison with friends and the
Hunters Sharing the Harvest Program.
It felt great to provide meals for those in
need while pursuing my passion.
HEADING FOR HOME
Then in May, an outdoor writers'
conference took me to Venango County.
Having never stepped foot on this
western soil, I asked for directions to the
local game lands where I hoped to call
in a spring gobbler. A friend made some
suggestions, and a "far-out, yet doable"
plan was hastily put in place.
Early in the morning, my wife Erin
and I arrived at the State Game Lands
45 parking lot to discover a number of
vehicles already there.
I pulled up a map on my smartphone,
which showed all of the service roads
running through the property. Erin had
volunteered to tag along and film, and
I told her we were going to walk farther
