"Some species, like cavity-nesting
wood ducks and human-tolerant Canada
geese, have benefited from the large-scale
habitat trends of forest maturation and
increased development that have been
detrimental to many other species," said
Ian Gregg, chief of the Game Commission's game management division.
"Interestingly, while teal and mallards
are doing exceptionally well at the continental scale, they have declined somewhat
in Pennsylvania due to losses of grassland
nesting habitat and subtle changes in wetland quality," Gregg explained. "When
you add this variability at different geographic scales for common waterfowl to
concerns about coastal-wintering species,
and the perpetual need to ensure gamebird harvests remain at sustainable levels,
cooperative partnerships such as flyway
councils and habitat joint ventures remain
vital for keeping waterfowl conservation
on the right track."
On the whole, nongame wetland birds
continue to feel the crunch that has been
associated with the historic draining of
their habitat.
The report noted 20 percent of wetland
birds are on the watch list. In Pennsylvania, where more than half of the state's
wetlands have been lost since colonization, the percentage of wetland-associated
birds on the species of greatest conservation need list is slightly higher.
Some Pennsylvania-endangered birds
didn't rise to watch-list status in the State
of North America's Birds, because they're
doing better in places with more wetlands.
These Pennsylvania species of concern
include the great egret, American and
least bitterns, and black-crowned and
yellow-crowned night-herons.
"Virtually all of our wetland-breeding
birds have declined in recent decades,"
Gross noted. "Their troubles stem from

invasive species, pollution, habitat loss
and fragmentation, even weather extremes
that rob spring of the steady water levels
and dependable food sources that broodrearing wetland species need."
Wetlands vigilance remains important.
A national priority in the 1990s, wetlands
no longer are receiving the attention they
once commanded. Since 2004, wetlands
loss has accelerated by 140 percent,
according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service. Equally troubling for wetland
birds is that government funding for
wetlands conservation has declined. So
the fight to save wetlands, a conservation
priority only a couple decades ago, apparently has lost its primacy.
The report notes the continent's boreal
forest remains one of the most dependable destinations for nesting birds. It's
"the nursery for billions of migratory
birds" and at least 80 percent of it is intact,
the report said. That's quite a contrast to
what's going on south of the border in
Mexico.
