I tried everything. Likely travel routes.
Ever-widening circles. Hitting the thick
laurel cover.
Nothing got up.
The droning pitter-patter of rain hitting the canopy muffled all other sound
in the woods.
Hours later, I had nothing, except a
bloody arrow.
It rained the rest of the day and overnight. I came back in the morning as
the sky cleared and searched again. The
results were the same.
As I left the mountain that Sunday, I
made myself a promise that I've kept for
20 years: I will not bowhunt in the rain or
with impending rain.
Personal Decisions
I know some hunters will find my commitment excessive. It might even be an
unacceptable alternative to the way they
hunt. I get that.
But after learning the hard way how
things might turn out, I prefer to err in
favor of the resource. I don't need any
deer that badly.
I know of big bucks that were taken by
bowhunters in the rain. I've also seen the
ads that suggest "real" bowhunters hunt
in the rain.
It's clear to me, too, that some bowhunters may have only rainy Saturdays
on which to hunt, because commitments
to family or careers keep them out of the
woods.
But none of that reasoning will
coax me to even lean away from my
position.
It's that automatic for me.
Now let's be clear here. I'm
not talking about hunting deer
with a firearm in the rain. Firearms kill by causing massive
tissue damage, and deer norAUGUST 2016
mally don't go far.
Broadheads don't work that way. They
kill by causing blood loss. And for some
deer, depending on the shot, that can take
a while.
It's easy to make a case for hunting
in the rain. Whitetails mostly are indifferent to it. And there's little doubt there
are advantages, because it can mask your
movements and any sounds you might
make. However, there's a greater potential
for things to go wrong.
Rain Handicaps
Rain can have a negative impact on
your shot.
First, there's the "slip factor." Maybe
it'll be with your footing, or possibly
hooking your release to the bowstring.
Rain in your face also might affect
your shot, as will wet fletchings if you're
shooting arrows with feathers.
Keeping feathers dry in the rain is a
pain.
