These cameras are designed to
minimize detection by the subject.
Many mammal species do not see
red, but the red glow is still visible to the
human eye looking right at it.
A black or "no-glow" flash, cannot
be detected by the human eye, but I have
found that certain animals - depending
on setup and conditions - detect something.
They know the camera is there and
either come closer to investigate, or flee
quickly.
LOCATION & PLACEMENT
Just like you'd want to hunt in an area
that shows sign of wildlife activity - like
a natural feeding area with shrubs and
mast, or a food plot with clover - you
want to look for high-potential locations
in placing a trail camera.
Look for tracks, trails and disturbed
vegetation where animals have been
feeding. Also, take a look at the lay of the
land and areas with cover. Critters like to
travel through or along corridors of cover,
like fencerows, forest edges, windbreaks
and ravines. These all are great places to
set up cameras.
Water sources, like springs that form
small ponds or wallows, have been a
gold mine for photos. All can be good
locations, but springs that have a clay
base also can provide a natural mineral
source that draws animals.
Four years ago, my friend Aden and I
set up a camera on a small, 8- by 10-foot,
clay-based pool. Its water was provided
only by rain. The pool was on the edge
of a small clearing in the middle of the
woods. There was a lot of bear sign, so
