stomp around. But we held still. She tried to pick up our scent, but the wind was blowing from her to us! About 10 minutes into our standoff, the other deer went back to feeding. But the big doe started stomping again and, eventually, the deer started getting a little spooky and began moving around. That's when that big doe finally turned broadside. Emily squeezed the trigger on her crossbow and her bolt flew. I watched that beautiful lighted nock hit the doe right behind the shoulder. It ran 30 yards and piled up. Emily was overwhelmed by the excitement and achievement. But she collected herself admirably, and we headed out to tag her deer. There is no thrill as great as hunting with a kid! SEPTEMBER 2016 25
