jumped in for a closer look.
Alt quickly began to rummage through
the trash.
"I was pulling out bags really fast
because I didn't want to get caught," he
said.
Finally, a hoof appeared. And as Alt
grasped the leg and pulled the carcass
into view, he excitedly shouted to Korber,
"Here's a deer, and it's mint condition!"
Just then he looked up to see "a man
dressed in a $1,000 suit" holding two bags
of garbage to be deposited in the dumpster, and looking with apparent disgust at
the man digging the deer out of it.
It might have been embarrassing, but
when the deer was placed in the spot Alt
had picked, it took all of 15 minutes for
the bear to come in and drag it off, and
another scene was in the books.
Korber in his post-camera production
stitched the many segments together
seamlessly. And Alt's tight telling of the
black bear's story also is rooted in the
cameraman's insistence that the narration
be just right.
The phrase, "Just one more time,"
spoken in Korber's voice, still lingers in
Alt's mind. It was repeated, time again,
between the completion of one take and
the beginning of the next. Even when the
narration was passable, Korber would
push for perfection.
In a scene where Alt crawls into a rock
den that had been used simultaneously by
a sow and five yearlings, Alt's foul-ups
led him to crawl back and forth repeatedly through the jagged entrance - 23
times in total.
"And I have some bloopers," Korber
offered.
Korber's camera wasn't rolling during
a break in another shoot, when Alt paused

to gather his thoughts after several takes
that didn't go well.
It was springtime, but still cold, Korber
recalled, and the big rocks at the site made
for the perfect setting.
Korber glanced over toward Alt, who
had gone off by himself to review his
lines. Pacing in a circle, with his head
down and eyes affixed on his script, Alt
stumbled on one of the rocks and fell face
first to the ground.
It's something they still can laugh
about 25 years later.
Another well-known clip - where a
sow in the Hemlock Farms development
sends her two cubs up trees to go raiding
birdfeeders and baitpiles - was even more
memorable in the making for the two-man
film crew.
Following in Alt's vehicle, tracking the
bear at its stops, the sow walked up steps
to an elevated deck outside one home,
where it knocked over a garbage can and
began feeding.
"I knew if we wasted even 15 seconds
to park the car, we were going to lose the
scene," Alt said.
Alt screeched the vehicle to a stop,
and he and Korber flung open the doors
and hopped out to document the raid. As
Korber watched through his camera's
viewfinder as the bear finished feeding,
descended the steps and disappeared
around the corner of the home, neither
he nor Alt could have been happier yet
another scene - showing nuisance activity - had been checked off their list.
"We were giggling like little kids
because we knew we had an amazing
sequence," Alt said.
Heading back to the vehicle, they
rounded the corner of the house to see the
sow standing on her hind legs at the stillopen driver's side door, and one of her
cubs following suit on the passenger side.
