shot, we assured David.
But when you hunt with John and me,
you have to expect some ribbing when
you miss, and we welcomed David to
the club.
He said next to nothing, but we all had
a good laugh and were off to a knee-high
weed field.
Topper immediately got birdy.
He would go on point, then break
point, time and again. It looked like we
were dealing with a runner.
Topper kept to the chase, finally
pinning the bird in a far corner of the field.
David moved in and the rooster rose
from the cover. Two shots followed - both
clean misses.
We jokingly told David to check his
shells to make sure they'd shot.
He only smiled.
Moving to another prime spot
consisting of multiflora rose, bittersweet
tangles and waist-high grass, Topper
quickly went to work again. The telltale
sign of his swishing tail signaled a
pheasant likely was in the field.
We followed Topper back and forth
across the field until he came to a stop
near a bittersweet tangle.
Up from the yellow and red tangle rose
the cockbird, his fiery red breast matching
the reds and yellows of the bittersweet.
David brought his gun to his shoulder,
got off two quick shots, but missed again.
More ribbing ensued, but with a bird
in hand, five solid points and beautiful
weather, we agreed it was a wonderful day
afield, and decided to head for the truck.
Topper might have been in midseason
shape, but we weren't.
With legs growing tired, we crossed a

large open pasture that had a small area
with briars and brushpiles in its center.
Topper made a beeline to it as the rest
of us continued toward the truck.
Suddenly, I heard the beep, beep, beep
from Topper's collar; he was on point.
We all looked at each other.
We would leave to David the decision
on whether we'd climb the hill again or
stay on course to the truck.
"Let's check it out," he said - more
words than I'd heard from him all day.
Up the hill we trudged, while Topper
maintained his solid stance.
He must have been on point for five
minutes before we reached him.
We looked at the sparse cover. It was
hard to believe it would hold a pheasant,
and even harder to believe one had sat
tight under Topper's nose for five minutes.
But I'd learned over the years to trust
my dog. David walked to Topper. Nothing
happened, but the dog didn't flinch.
"There can't be a pheasant in there,"
John said.
Topper didn't move a muscle.
After some additional banter, David
took one more step, proving John right.
There wasn't a pheasant there, but two.
The roosters erupted at David's feet,
almost knocking the hat off his head.
Flustered, he never got off a shot as the
birds headed in opposite directions.
We looked at each other, and laughed.
What a way to end the hunt, and what
a way to begin the season.
David just grinned and said, "That
was fun."
Two sentences from the boy in less
than five minutes.
Opening days certainly are magical.
