Customized '03 Springfield

For match competition, the Springfield 1903 National Match model was
produced with a star-gaged barrel and
its match standards marked on the barrel's crown (models from 1910 to 1921
weren't marked), and Lyman 48 aperture
sights installed on the receiver, just ahead
of the bolt. The barreled actions were
bedded into the pistol-grip stocks, the
bolts were polished bright and the safety
was reversed.
There also were International Match
models with heavier or longer barrels and
match sights; sporting models that were
lighter and built for hunting purposes; and
a series of models chambered in .22 Long
Rifle called the Caliber .22 Model 1922,
1922M1 and 1922M2.
By World War II, the M1 Garand had
become the U.S. military's adopted arm,
but because of manufacturing shortages,
the Springfield 1903A1 filled the gap.
The need for quick turnaround slightly
changed the aesthetics, but not the function or accuracy of this model called the
Model 1903A3.
During World War I, U.S. snipers with
their Springfields used the Warner Swasey
3X prismatic scope, as well as the Winchester A5 (the rights for which later were
purchased by Lyman for the manufacture
of the Lyman 5A). There were two scope
mounts, one on the forward part of the
receiver and one on the barrel, just ahead
of the rear sight. In World War II, the
updated National Match rifle with Unertl
Target 8x scope was used.

The official Springfield 1903A4
sniper rifle was introduced in 1943. It
was a Model 1903A3 with no sights, a
turned-down bolt handle, and a Redfield
one-piece scope mount attached to the
receiver, fore and aft. The scope was a
2.75X Weaver Model 330 with ¼-minute
internal adjustments.
About 29,000 1903A4s were produced
during the war. Once the production of the
M1 Garand caught up with military needs
in 1944, the Springfield 1903 more or less
became obsolete, though sniper versions
were used into the Korean War (19501953) and saw some limited use early in
Vietnam (mid-1960s).
After World War I, the Springfield
1903 became a great source for custom
rifle creations.
Townsend Whelen and others wrote
about their Springfields customized by
Wundhammer, Griffin and Howe, and
other master gunsmiths of the 1920s and
'30s. After World War II, they became surplus arms and very popular to customize
for hunting and sporting purposes. When
done right, they made a handsome rifle.
Today, there are better-designed bolt
guns made with modern steels, but don't
sell the Springfield short.
Thousands are still being used, and
continually proving their worth as target
guns and sporting arms.
If you're ever in a gun shop and come
across a Springfield 1903, I'd recommend
buying it. If you don't, I might be right
behind you.
