MOUNTAIN TEAMING
Edge and Poole corresponded through
the mail weekly - and occasionally daily
- to chip away at the pressing affairs of
Hawk Mountain, from having boundaries surveyed to buying a cabin for the
Mountain's first curator, Maurice Broun,
and his wife, Irma.
Poole and his wife, Helen, knew Edge
well. They visited one another and Poole
appeared to be one of Edge's confidants,
based upon correspondence. She valued
his opinions on everything from national
conservation affairs to Hawk Mountain
Sanctuary board members and officers.
Joe Poole remembered a story his
Mom told about Edge coming to visit
their home in west Reading.
"Mom was cooking in the kitchen and
Mrs. Edge asked, 'Can I come and help
you?'" Joe recalled. "She went into the
kitchen just as Mom was getting the roast
out of the oven and transferring it from
the rack to the serving
plate. It slipped and went
'BANG' on the floor. Mrs.
Edge said, 'Pick it up and
brush it off, dear, no one
will know but us.'"
Although a member of
the Big Apple's aristocracy, Edge was uncommonly practical and
thrifty. She required

Hawk Mountain expenses, and Poole
found himself routinely explaining them.
When the Mountain's first headquarters, Schaumbacher's cabin, was purchased for the Brouns as living quarters,
it came without furniture, because Edge,
Poole and the former owner couldn't
come to agreement on a price for what
was there. When the Brouns arrived and
found no furniture, they went shopping.
"They called me from the Brighter
Furniture Company in Reading, saying
that they had found a stove, a table, a
kitchen cabinet, a wash tub and chairs
that could be procured for ... $80," Poole
wrote Edge. "At first I stood out against
paying that much money, but since they
seemed to feel that they had to have some
furniture and could not take the time to
do a great deal of shopping, I thought I
had better draw a check to that amount."
The small house had history. It was
formerly a tavern, reputedly haunted,
and the former residence of an alleged
serial killer, according to Broun in Hawks
Aloft: The Story of Hawk Mountain. The
Brouns nonetheless made it home with
their new furniture.
Poole and his family spent considerable time on the mountain and with the
