Joe remembers eating lunch and
watching hummingbirds on the Brouns'
back porch and seeing Irma Broun racing
around in her Jeep. He said she called it,
her "way of flying." He also remembers
his dad and Maurice Broun walking dogs
on the mountain, even going skinnydipping at a nearby swimming hole.
Hawk Mountain, he noted, was quieter
in those early days.
"My mother would carry me up the
mountain trail and Dad would carry my
brother Charles," Joe Poole recalled. "I
was in a knapsack on her back. And she
carried a big horse blanket and laid it
down in the rocks at the North Lookout,
where I was in the sunlight, but couldn't
roll off and I'd go to sleep."

Hawk Mountain's start-up was anything but easy. But Poole was there
through those trying times and would live
to see it prosper. He became one of Hawk
Mountain Sanctuary's seven founding
directors, its third life member, and would
later join its Board of Sponsors. Few
places meant more to him.
Hawk Mountain and Berks County's
Lake Ontelaunee, built on Maiden Creek
in 1926, were Poole's two favorite local
destinations. Deciding which to visit in
the fall usually involved a drive, Joe said.
"I would go birding with him on Saturdays," Joe explained. "We'd drive over to
Wyomissing to check the smokestacks at
VF Industries to see which way the wind
was blowing. Then we'd know whether
to go to Hawk Mountain or Lake Ontelaunee. I would eventually become his
eyes for him, because he was wearing
trifocals, and he couldn't see well through
binoculars."

DAYS WITH THE BIRDS
So enthralled with birds was Poole
that he began developing his first book,
Days with the Birds, sometime before
he was drafted in 1918 into World War
I. As he chugged across the Atlantic to
the front in France, he began a journal to
record his journey and maintain records
of birds and other wildlife. Days with
the Birds would never be published, but
entries and sketches from the journal
would surface in the winter 2000-01 issue
of the Historical Review of Berks County.
Joe had them published.
It's unclear why Poole's first book
didn't get printed. Sandwiched between
