although unpublished, was circulated
and provided the most comprehensive
statewide assessment of bird life available
for Pennsylvania.
Still, the manuscript's influence on
ornithology or its management implications has gone largely unrecognized, said
Dan Brauning, the Game Commission's
wildlife diversity chief.
"Poole's unpublished Birds of Pennsylvania became a dependable resource
for a time when there were few contemporary state-specific references available
for wild-bird managers," Brauning said.
"Poole probably pulled together this
massive undertaking because he, too,
recognized this shortcoming. The book
might not have been published in its
entirety, but it was and remains important
in bird conservation."
The Reading Museum in 1997 pub26
lished A Century of Bird Life in Berks
County, Pennsylvania, appending Poole's
original book with more timely details of
the county's birds and including unpublished excerpts from Poole's manuscript.
According to its editor, Bill Ulrich, "...
we have preserved as much of Poole's
own language from that manuscript as
is still applicable, including many of his
unique descriptions of the birds and their
times of occurrence."
The four-year project, had the blessing and financial support of Helen Poole.
Sadly, she didn't live to see it published.
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary biologist
Laurie Goodrich said the manuscript and
Poole's larger body of work continue to
inspire.
"Earle Poole's natural-history knowledge, publications and artwork left
biologists working in Pennsylvania, a
invaluable legacy and a rich understanding of bird and mammal life in Berks
County and throughout Pennsylvania,"
Goodrich said. "His detailed work at the
Reading Museum and outreach in the
community of Berks County touched
many young biologists and continues to
provide a foundation for those following
in his footsteps."
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary lead scientist Keith Bildstein agreed.
"Earl Poole's standing in the local
scientific community, together with his
unchallenged ornithological expertise
and unwavering support for the establishment of Hawk Mountain were fundamental to the Sanctuary's early conservation
successes," Bildstein said. "Poole's backing gave Hawk Mountain the immediate
traction it needed to become a bona fide
refuge for birds of prey."
