And it sent a 117-grain round-nose bullet
at more than 2,200 fps, which back then
was fast.
The .25-35 WCF was considered a
pretty fair deer cartridge within typical
hunting ranges (under 200 yards), and
it became popular for potting varmints,
with some handloaders loading 60-grain
bullets and reaching velocities around
2,700 fps.
Several other rifle manufacturers -
domestic and abroad - chambered their
rifles for the .25-35 WCF.
I have shot several Model 94 rifles
chambered for this 25-caliber round, and
found them accurate and pleasant to shoot.

THE .25 REMINGTON

I hunted woodchucks with that rifle,
and had fun on the farm plinking at tin
cans.
I tried shots at woodchucks near the
200-yard mark, but the factory open
sights weren't conducive for that kind of
accuracy.
Production of the Winchester Model
92, and most other rifles chambered for
it, ceased during World War II, although
Marlin made a small run of its Model
94CL lever-action with a 22-inch barrel
and half magazine in .25-20 WCF.
Ammunition still is being manufactured in the .25-20 WCF.

THE .25-35 WCF
Another influential quarter-bore cartridge is the .25-35 WCF, which was
introduced in 1895 and chambered in the
Winchester Model 1894 lever-action.
This was one of the first smokeless
powder sporting cartridges, immediately
following the release of the .30-30 WCF.

To compete with Winchester's leveraction repeaters, Remington in 1906
brought out the Model 8 semi-auto rifle
chambered for the .25 Remington rimless
cartridge, which had similar ballistics to
the Winchester .25-35 WCF.
Remington in 1908 chambered this
cartridge in its Model 14 pump-action
rifle, then in its Model 30 bolt-action in
1921. The .25 Remington cartridge was
loaded with a 100-grain bullet at more
than 2,300 fps, as well as a 117-grain slug
at 2,200 fps.
I'm not really sure how popular this
cartridge was, though. At gun shops and
gun shows, I rarely see a firearm chambered for the 25 Remington.
Rifles chambered for the cartridge
were manufactured up until World War
II and ammunition ceased around 1950,
but today a few specialty ammunition
companies manufacture this cartridge.
The .25 Remington, like the other
quarter-bores that preceded it, made
its mark, then led the way for the
high-velocity dual-purpose rifles that
followed.
