cess is the product of your own hard work.
While I didn't know the area I'd be
hunting, I was more than willing to put
in the time and effort to learn it the best
I possibly could in the preseason. And
while I'd heard the elk in Centre County
are exceptionally wary, and that Elk Hunt
Zone 13, with its thousands of acres of
public land, is tough to hunt due to its size,
I saw no reason I couldn't be successful
on a Pennsylvania DIY elk hunt.
One of the outfitters who called me
after I drew a tag told me flat-out he didn't
think I could do it on my own, and that
only served to further light a fire under me.
The weekend following the drawing,
Des and I made our first of what would
be many trips to Centre County to scout
the hunt zone for elk. In fact, except for
the time I was in Colorado for my elk
hunt there, I was in the hunt zone every
weekend, scouting on both Saturday and
Sunday. And took some vacation days to
scout, as well.
Des and I made a lot of these scouting trips together. If Des had things
to do at home on Sunday, we might
make the hour-and-a-half drive home
Saturday night, and I'd return alone

Sunday morning.
Other weekends we would stay Saturday night into Sunday.
Des and I both decided to give up our
October archery deer hunting to dedicate
our time outdoors to scouting, putting on
countless miles hiking, biking and filming
bulls. Many times we would split up to
cover more areas.
It was a great month for us to spend
together, and I am truly blessed to have
her as my best friend and hunting partner.
Right off the bat, we were seeing some
really fantastic elk. On our first day of
scouting, we saw 10 bulls together - a
few of them were really big.
Later that weekend we saw a bull with
a massive dark rack and points everywhere. We nicknamed him "Big Boy,"
and while we'd have difficulty locating
him again, he always ranked high on the
list of bulls I'd seen.
More frequently, we'd encounter
another bull - a big, typical 8-by-8 with
splits on the ends of his main beams.
Because we collected lots of pictures
of him on a trail camera we set up on a
wallow, we nicknamed him "Wally."
