bulls, too - bulls I'd be floored to take
during a Colorado hunt. But as the season
neared, I narrowed the list of bulls I'd
target to Wally and Big Boy.
I was only willing to make an exception in two cases: one, if it got to be late
in the week and I still was searching for
a bull or, two, if an opportunity to take
another good bull with my bow presented
itself.
I planned to carry both my bow and
my rifle in pursuit of a Pennsylvania bull.
But first, Des and I had our bow-only
Colorado hunt to get to.
Des has been hunting elk DIY in
Colorado for just about as long as I have.
Before we ever got together, friends of
Des' and mine had been trying to introduce us because of our passion for hunting
and the outdoors. One year, after I went
to Colorado on a DIY hunt, and learned
she had been in Colorado on her own DIY
hunt that very same week, I knew I had
to meet her.
We soon planned a fly-fishing trip
together, and the last seven times we've
hunted elk in Colorado have been together.
We married in 2014.
We knew from the start that this year's
Colorado hunt would be like none other.
Des and I were among three couples
selected to have their hunts filmed for
the TV show "Addicted to the Outdoors,"
which appears on The Outdoor Channel.
We would follow our same routine of
hunting DIY from the wall tent in San
Juan National Forest, but this time we'd
have a cameraman tagging along.
After eight September days hunting
High Country bulls, hearing just one
bugle and having only one elk encounter
that presented no shot, we joked that we
fell victim to the "cameraman jinx." We
returned home with unfilled tags, but I
always tell people I consider harvesting an
elk a bonus on a Colorado hunt, because
the memories are great either way.
A sampling of the success Desiree and Josh Fuqua have had on their DIY elk hunts in Colorado
is shown below. When Josh learned his name been drawn for a Pennsylvania bull tag in 2016,
he didn't see any reason why he couldn't guide himself to success in northern Centre County.
