Larger than a crow, but a little smaller
than a red-tailed hawk, the goshawk lives
in northern forests around the world.
In eastern North America, it has nested
as far south as Virginia, but it's much more
widespread in the western mountains and
northern Great Lakes states.
Pennsylvania is near the southern edge
of its breeding range in the Appalachian
Mountains.
Goshawks long have been considered
an uncommon nester in the big woods
of Pennsylvania, where they've been
documented most often in the Allegheny
National Forest, Cook Forest and Black
Forest.
There also is a long history of nesting
goshawks in the Seven Mountains, North
Mountain, the Poconos, and occasionally on the Blue Mountain, and limited
evidence of goshawks nesting in the
southwestern counties.
Almost all goshawks have been found
in large blocks of forest, often where conifers dominate, and at higher elevations.
Usually these are described as northern
hardwood forests, but they also are occasionally oak-pine forests. There usually
are tall trees in nesting territories, but
there also are small forest openings, such
as forest roads, swamps, blowdowns and
timber cuttings, where goshawks often
hunt.
Throughout its range, the goshawk is
not the grouse or hare specialist some proclaim it is. It is an opportunistic generalist
with a diet that includes everything from
crows, jays, woodpeckers, robins and
chipmunks to turkeys, grouse, squirrels,
rabbits and hares.
The most frequent prey items found
at Pennsylvania goshawk nests are tree
squirrels, crows, ruffed grouse, mourning
doves and chipmunks.

There is no evidence that goshawks
have an appreciably negative impact on
any game species, because goshawks
are nowhere near common enough to
impact any prey population. Most prey
are common species.
GOSHAWK NESTS
Their nests usually are built high in the
fork of a tall cherry, maple, birch, beech,
hemlock, larch or pine tree. They're about
2½ to 3 feet in diameter and constructed
of large sticks.
Despite their size, nests usually are
difficult to find, because of the canopy
leaf cover around the nest tree.
