Jeff Hale took a few good bucks in the
years he focused his hunting on the pursuit
of whitetails with a bow, and prior to
that, hunting rabbits with beagles was his
chosen specialty. But Hale would grow to
miss the generalist approach that made
hunting such a cherished act in his youth.

After decades of busting brambles,
skinning rabbits, and losing my voice
over hard-headed hounds, I came to a
realization that was difficult to admit: I
was growing tired of it.
Rabbit hunting was beginning to feel
more like work and less like fun. I began
to feel shackled by my own specialization.
I had the feeling that something was
missing in my outdoor life. I craved that
old freedom.
Though it smacked of heresy, I found
myself wondering what it might be like
to go hunting without my beagles. I
certainly would miss their voices, which
is the truest reason for hound hunting to
begin with, but somehow that joy felt
more expensive than it had ever seemed
in the past.
Perhaps I had simply done too much
rabbit hunting. Why did I feel so constricted?
There were whispers and smoky tendrils of memory from the Novembers past,
but they went unheeded as I promptly

Somewhere in the journey I had
acquired a compound bow and learned the
fundamentals of archery hunting.
My experience was typical for that
earlier era.
I found shooting deer with a bow to
be an interesting challenge, but I mostly
regarded bowhunting as a pleasant and
pastoral activity for the warm, early weeks
of October; a pregame activity before the
serious hunting seasons kicked in.
That was before the revolution; before
the advent of quality deer management,
the extreme popularity of outdoor television, and the proliferation of the thousands
of outdoor products they have spawned.
With a sudden explosion of information came an explosion of interest. Smallgame hunting sharply declined as untold
thousands took up bowhunting during
the rut.
Outdoor media promised us a prescription for success. All we needed was
a judicious application of technology, a
maxed-out credit card, and marriage to
a tree stand.
There was a cultish allure to it. A buck
taken by bow became the Holy Grail of
hunting and required the full-time devotion of religion. Nothing but total commitment would do.
Hunters no longer were depicted as
carefree, happy sportsmen, but as the ultimate predator - deadly-serious strategists
