it showed good blood.
Still, I decided to let the deer go
overnight.
My friend, Jesse, and my dad met me
the next morning at 5 a.m. We found the
deer in about 5 minutes, 45 yards from
where I'd shot it.
I even made it to school on time.
My goal each year is to have enough
antlerless licenses and DMAP permits
to be able to hunt through most of the
season.
I really don't care if I fill them all, I
just want to be able to keep hunting.
And I had two tags left going into the
firearms season.
The excitement of opening day never
gets old.
Six family members joined me at my
farm for opening day, and we all took
stands at daylight. I was in a stand that
I had never used in the firearms season.
More often than not, I won't see deer
early on the first day of the season.
But today would be different.
At 7:10, I heard running deer and saw
three small bucks that passed at 20 yards.
They stopped in the brush behind
my stand.
Just then, I heard another deer coming.
No antlers were visible. I shouldered
my .308 and shot when the deer hit the
next opening.
The deer, which turned out to be
another buck with its antlers broken off,
went 40 yards and piled up.
While field-dressing the deer, I heard
two shots from the direction of my
daughter Erin's stand.
When Erin came over to my stand, I
learned she'd shot one of two does that
went by her, and my brother, Ed, got the
second one when it went by his stand.
After bringing in the three deer, we
started putting on small drives to others
in our hunting party.
On our last drive of the day, Erin's
husband Mark, who started hunting late
in his life, made a good shot on a large
doe. It was just his second deer, and we
congratulated him and rejoiced with him.
My handgun hunt the next week
would round out what truly was a special
season.
While I never set out to accomplish
this feat, and I have no plans to try to
duplicate it, I really enjoy hunting with
a variety of sporting arms.
Each presents its challenges and
extends your hunting time.

Commissioners from 2008 to 2016, Ron Weaner,
of Biglerville, is pictured here with two of his
2014 deer harvests - the doe he took with this
.357 Magnum in the second week of the firearms deer season, and the 6-point he arrowed
during the first week of archery season. Sadly,
Weaner passed away April 14 after a long battle
with leukemia. He was 60 years old.
