of phone calls concerned me.
I had knots in my stomach when my
mother finally got through on her cellphone, laughing as she asked, "Can you
hear me now? You drew an antlerless elk
tag!"
From worry about my parents to disbelief to excitement - it was an emotional
roller-coaster ride.
My mind was racing, and I don't
remember everything we talked about,
but I do remember telling her I planned
to use Dad's .45-70 for the hunt.
I had a little more than two months
to prepare for the Oct. 31 season opener.
I would be working a seasonal job most
weekends through Oct. 28, so I planned to
scout during my weekdays off.
From the start, this was a family event.
Anytime I went to elk country, my
parents accompanied me, as did my sons,
when their schedules allowed.
On one of our first scouting trips, we
sought lodging for the week of elk season
and soon found a house to rent for the
week that - ironically - was next door to
the place where my dad had purchased
the .45-70 six years earlier.
Even with the scouting, planning,
packing gear and practice sessions at the
gun range to make sure the .45-70 still was
holding its zero, the 10 weeks between the
drawing and the hunt passed agonizingly
slowly.
HUNTING FOR A SPOT

I was up at 2:47 a.m. on the season
opener, not only because of my excitement for the hunt, but because of my
indecision of where to go.
My parents and I would hunt on the
opener, and other family members were
to arrive at camp later that day to stay
through most of the week, and help if I
was successful.
I was not entirely sure I wanted to kill
an elk on the first outing. I've had four
knee surgeries and my parents also have
limitations. My mother jokingly dubbed
us the "hardly able gang."
Despite it all, we settled on a spot and
were off, but a little later than we should
have been.
Reaching the parking area, it seemed
every hunter with an Elk Hunt Zone 2
license decided to hunt where we wanted
to go.
I slung the .45-70 and started on the
more than mile-long walk behind a
closed gate. We had to bypass many spots
because others had beaten us to them.
