with staggered steps, to make sure all the
steps are aligned properly.
If the sections are pieced together backwards or in the wrong order, a step might
be missing in an area you really need one.
Proper assembly is key to safety and ease
of climbing.
I carry sticks to the site disassembled
and strapped together in a bundle, then
follow manufacturer's recommendations
and assemble the stick entirely before tilting it upright and against the tree.
At this point, you want to check a few
things.
The base of the stick forms an upside
down "T", which needs to be on the
ground and relatively straight when
seated.
The stick itself needs to be tight against
the tree, as well. Avoid using sticks on
trees where the trunk grows out at an
angle, then up, creating an open space
between the ground and where the stick
reaches the tree. If the first section of the
stick is not flat against the tree, it is likely
at some point to buckle as you're climbing above it - creating a serious fall risk.
Also look at the U-shaped brackets
on the back of the stick and how they
contact the tree. You don't want any space
between the points of the "U" and the tree.
Even a small amount of space will allow

the stick to move as you're climbing it,
and it could kick left or right when you're
stepping from one step to the next.
Incomplete contact between the points
and the tree also might cause the stick to
squeak as you're climbing.
MAKING THE CLIMB
Most climbing sticks come with 6-foot
straps that are run through locking buckles
to secure the stick to the tree.
These are adequate for most trees, but
if you're placing a stand in a really big
tree, you'll need longer straps.
Before I place a stand, I'll loop all the
straps I need through an eyelet on the back
of my climbing belt so I have them handy
as I work my way up the stick.
Be sure to always check straps for
wear. If they've been used previously and
left outdoors for periods of time, there's a
chance they could have dry-rotted since
their last use. Inspect all stitching, as well
as the buckles. Don't use a strap you're
uncertain about.
When running straps around the tree
and through the buckles, always be sure
the straps are horizontal or above-horizontal to the bracket, then cinch them as
tight as you can.
