"It took me 12 days of hunting to
finally get one," he said.
And while it might seem obvious,
scent control is extremely important
when hunting bears, Bromley said.
"I'm paranoid about keeping human
odor in check when hunting bears," he
said. "You can beat a bear's sense of
sight, but not the nose. That's why I like
hunting when it's windy, and you can
use the wind in your favor."
If Bromley's bear tag remains
unfilled through the archery season,
he generally will join with friends in the
firearms season to conduct organized
drives, concentrating on clearcuts.
He especially likes the camaraderie
of bear drives.
"In my mind, bears taken on drives
belong to all the hunters involved,"
Bromley said. "You might be the
lucky hunter who kills the bear, but
it's because of the group effort that
you did."
LOOKING BACK & AHEAD
Bromley said he'll probably continue to hunt bears in New York, and
maybe return to Canada, where he's
killed a bear.
But there's no place like Pennsylvania, he said.
"The quality of bears here is so good
you really don't need to go anywhere
else," he said.
In the areas he hunts, Bromley said
he knows bears larger than any he's
harvested are out there.
He said he can't wait until his two
sons, Easton, 6, and Colton, 5, are old
enough to join him bear hunting. They
already participate in the Mentored
Youth Hunting program for deer and

place within the archery deer
season, instead of after it. The

"Colton loves checking my trail
cameras for bears," Bromley said.
Even if the boys inherit their father's
bear-hunting skills, neither will be the
second Bromley to be listed in the
archery category in the Pennsylvania
Big Game Records book.
That distinction belongs to Todd
Bromley, of Stoneboro - a distant
relative of Heath Bromley. Todd Bromley's 2015 Mercer County bear scores
20-3/16 inches, tied for 16th all-time.
Heath Bromley said his wife,
Brandy, suggests they'll need a bigger
house once Colton and Easton start
hunting bears.
There's already a full-mount of
Bromley's 2014 bear, plus three,
three-quarter wall mounts, a shoulder
mount and a rug, not to mention all of
the skulls, which are displayed in the
house.
Bromley said it's hard to put into
words what harvesting two record-book
bears in back-to-back seasons in Pennsylvania has meant to him.
"An awesome experience," is about
as close as he can come.
