A
LWAYS FATAL to deer and elk,
chronic wasting disease was detected
in Pennsylvania in 2012.
Its coming wasn't totally unexpected,
and the impacts of its presence weren't
necessarily felt immediately by all Pennsylvanians, or even the majority of them.
But, today, as the number of CWD
cases continues to escalate, as the disease
emerges unexpectedly in new areas, as
Disease Management Area boundaries are
expanded, each time requiring thousands
more people to become familiar with
restrictions that affect their deer hunting,
the average person's awareness of the
disease has grown.
And the threat CWD poses to the Commonwealth is as serious as ever.
CWD first appeared in Pennsylvania
at a captive deer farm in Adams County
in the fall of 2012.
The first cases of CWD in free-ranging
deer also occurred in 2012, after three
deer harvested by hunters in Bedford
and Blair counties tested positive for the
disease. These deer were tested as part of
the Game Commission's ongoing CWD
surveillance program.

Disease Management Area 2 (DMA
2) was established here in 2013, with
restrictions enacted to prevent moving
whole deer carcasses and high-risk deer
parts out of the DMA, and to ban the use
or field possession of deer lures while
hunting, as well as the feeding of deer,
within the DMA.
The harvest sites of the initial CWDpositive deer within DMA 2 were somewhat spread out from each other.
The distance between the northernmost
and southernmost locations is 20 miles,
spaced along the mountain ridge that runs
between Hollidaysburg and Osterburg.
The southernmost location is about 30
miles north of the Maryland border and,
at the time, was 40 miles from the closest
known CWD-positive free-ranging deer
in Maryland.
The sequence of maps below serves
to illustrate the disease's increase within
DMA 2 since the initial detection.
Shaded in pink, the DMA has expanded
each year due to new detections of CWDpositive animals near or outside the
DMA's boundary.
