Autumn's Welcome Dilemma

CTOBER PRESENTS outdoor people with a happy
dilemma and, as an outdoor person, you'll recognize it. It's
the challenge of savoring every fleeting moment of a fast-passing
month, while also anticipating what's to come later in the season.
Deer hunters know this challenge well. An October deer stand
demands attention in the moment. Yet, the hunter's mind will stray
to November's rut or later plans for December. Planning ahead is important, but
neglect in the present can cost. That twig snapping behind you was faint, but
real, and that rustle in the leaves might not be a squirrel. Late-season hunts may
well bring exciting encounters, but one is about to happen right now, if you're
alert in the present.
Waterfowlers confront this pleasant dilemma, too. They'll wait among
emblazoned creek-bank hardwoods, concealed and watchful, for wood ducks.
But even a duck hunter's concentration drifts ahead to late-fall when mallards
linger in marshy backwaters. If you yen for duck breast, it pays to be most intent
on the present. Wood ducks drop in fast, and they don't afford second chances.
Many hunters are birders, too, and a dual-interest in wildlife broadens
the range of memorable encounters. But, in October, it also ushers in more
distractions. Late-fall ascents of Hawk Mountain or the Allegheny Front Hawk
Watch, lured by kettles of red-tailed hawks and lone golden eagles, are pleasant
to ponder. Birders, be mindful though. If you get too immersed in that raptorreverie, you'll miss the equally inspiring flights of thrushes and warblers that
troop through in October. Only the attentive reap the treat.
Still, it may be that I'm making too much of this quandary. Autumn's rewards
are there to enjoy in whatever manner pleases you most - attentively riveted in the
now, or straying toward speculation of hunts to come. You win either way. It's your
autumn, and it only comes once each year. If you wish, while you wind through
October's sun-dappled grouse coverts, intent for that thunderous flush, look
upward. Note the frost-pinched grape clusters and the scarlet clumps of dogwood
fruit. These will tell you where to return weeks later to intercept a turkey flock.
Simultaneous savoring and anticipating autumn is a big assignment. But, as the
saying goes, somebody's got to do it, right? When friends or relatives talk about
some pleasure trip they've planned to, say, Florida, Europe or the West Coast for
the coming October, I nod approvingly but silently wonder: "Why would anyone
voluntarily leave these Pennsylvania woodlands at the ripe height of autumn? In the
fall, there's nowhere I'd rather be than the woods here at home.
