Ever since discovering the bigger-thanlife adventures of Daniel Boone in a book
in the late 1950s, I understood something
about that the long, sleek firearm he was
pictured holding, while seated on a tree
stump next to the world's ugliest dog.
No matter if it was used in "Cain-tuckee," it was - and always will be - a
Pennsylvania flintlock rifle, which since
has become the official firearm of the
Keystone State.
At the time, I had no way of knowing
that, nearly 30 years later, a 54-caliber
flintlock longrifle built by master gunmaker and former Catawissa resident
Dave Motto would be my rifle of choice
for the regular firearms and post-Christmas flintlock deer seasons.
But Pennsylvania-style rifles never
were designed for horseback hunts in the
Rocky Mountains, where I was headed.
That's not to say they weren't put to
use in the Old West. As is accurately
depicted in the 2015 film "The Revenant,"
Pennsylvania rifles were used by Rocky
Mountain fur trappers of the day.
The main character in the film carries
a Bucks County rifle, specially built for
the production by master gunmaker Ron
Luckenbill, of Emporium.
But there's really no such thing as a
typical "Pennsylvania" rifle.

Some of them, in fact, are swivelbreech
rifles with two barrels stacked, one on the
other, each equipped with its own frizzen
and flash pan.
The barrels rotate along an axis to provide for firing both in quick succession.
In the late 1990s, I asked nationally
recognized gunmaker Leonard Day, of
West Hatfield, Mass., to build a swivelbreech rifle that would allow me a quick
follow-up shot should I need it while
hunting bears in Quebec.
While I was fascinated with the swivelbreech flintlocks Day built, one with a
percussion ignition was more practical for
my needs. A shorter, Hawken-style rifle
also seemed to make more sense.
Years earlier, I had discussed with Day
the possibility of him building for me a
Hawken-style rifle similar to one used by
the famous mountain man Jim Bridger.
Bridger's rifle was a 58-caliber, which
must have weighed more than 20 pounds.
I decided on a 54-caliber instead.
It's more than adequate as a bear rifle.
But at nearly 18 pounds, it's not something you want to use when still-hunting
or driving.
I'd be hunting elk on horseback during
my upcoming Colorado hunt, so the rifle's
weight wouldn't be an issue.
And given that my rifle was styled
