I always associated mink with creek bottoms and
the like, but one year, we saw a mink during archery
deer season, a quarter-mile from the closest water.
As fall progressed, we saw it on a regular basis.
And during the two-week rifle deer season, we
observed a whole new set of mink behavior.
Almost every morning, the mink would come
into the thicket in front of the treehouse and start
hunting rabbits.
With its keen nose, it would start on a rabbit's
track and follow it through a labyrinth of trails in
the honeysuckle.
After a bit, the rabbit would pop out on a shooting lane and take off at a high rate of speed.
The mink was a lot slower, but was relentless in
its pursuit.
When the rabbit would get far enough ahead, it
would stop and look back on its trail. Then it would
take a great big leap off to the side, and disappear
in the brush.
Here would come the mink, in hot pursuit
until it reached the end of the trail, where
it would stop, apparently confused. Then
it would start working its way back the
trail and making circles until it found
where the rabbit had jumped aside.
Then it was game on, and the
chase resumed. There were mornings it went on for more than two
hours.
We never saw the mink ever
catch a rabbit, but I can't help
but think he was successful,
time and again, or he wouldn't
have done it day after day.
The trapper who traps
the property explained that
muskrats are the mink's primary food source, and with
the muskrat population dropping off, he heard more reports
of mink roaming away from their
favorite habitat and seeking other
food sources.
